So, last night I went to see The Gazillion Bubble Show at the New World Stages Theater, featuring Fan Yang-The Bubble King...apparently.
I'm a grown up, but I still love bubbles.
I was all ready for a bubble extravaganza!
How can I put this?
Now, I give Fan credit for his bubble blowing abilities. I'm not trying to diminish his elite bubble status.
But, that show was the most poorly produced mess I have seen...ever?
I haven't laughed that hard or that much in years. I came into my office and tried to share with my coworkers what I had witnessed, but I was laughing so hard I don't think they could understand me.
I had a BLAST!
So unbelievably cheezy and weird. So weird. Europeans. He's Vietnamese actually, but French Canadian...but sounds like Wolfgang Puck....or Yakov Smirnoff.
He spent some time in Germany, I think, and some other European countries where it's perfectly appropriate for men to wear glittery shirts with see-through sleeves.
He wore it in front if innocent children too. (shaking head)
The set was full of Christmas trees. It's May.
The music sounded like it was done on Fan's casio way back in 1984.
Then it turned all discotech on us. Ooooh!
The magic, the miracle that is the BUBBLE!
It's liquid-but it's a GAS!
There were video reenactments of his childhood as a budding bubblist;
His obsession with rainbows, the ridicule from his family who told him he couldn't make a living off of freakin' bubbles.
If you have little kids (2-5), take them.
You, have a drink, or maybe some acid and have a ball...bubble (I had to)

Well, I didn't have a drink before the show but I survived. I didn't need to be on crack to laugh really hard over the re-enactment video of his childhood in Yugoslavia. Or the photo of him as a kid.
Also, we could have definitely done without the Christmas pine trees as a set. Just a basic black backdrop with the stars would have been more than enough. And the music was a bit dorky. When people were asked to clap to the music, people didn't know how to clap to dorky music that didn't work at all with the scene or stunts he was doing. It was waaaayyyyyyy off key.
Aside from the few cheesy moments, Fan's bubble technique is definitely not one I have ever seen. He definitely knows how to bring them to life in some ways and I do find his record-breaking artistic bubbles to be credible to him. We can all spend hours trying to do at least one of his tricks that takes Fan nearly seconds to do without popping a bubble. I had a few favorite moments of the show such as the smoke filled bubbles and the light affects that makes the bubbles look like floating jewels. Lighting was really the best thing for the show that gave character to the bubbles. As an adult that likes to have fun, go to amusement parks and do circus tricks, I was amused, but the show is best for kids up until the age of 10 since kids at that age have much more magical vision then we do as adults.
On other notes, the show is closing this weekend, but on June 19th, Fan will have a special show that morning and will attempt to break guiness record #13 for him by trying to get 36 people into a single bubble. Good Luck Fan!
